Here's the link from the baseball side; you can already see my opinion.

Henry figured it would be a good discussion over here.  What are your thoughts?

Not sure how great a discussion it would be - just think we need more members :-) Pretty clear that they were NOT manufactured as blotters. As an aside - I have a couple items picturing them in use and over the years I have bid on a couple of smoking jackets utilizing silks and/or cigar ribbons and once a PAIR OF PANTS!

I can't see it, there would be plenty with ink on them if true.

Like someone on the baseball thread, my mind jumped right to "what about the flags?" While I'm not sure that any of this stuff is the model of flag etiquette, the occasional adherence (esp by ATC) to the no-advert rule on material from the period bearing the US flag makes me suspicious they would have purposefully designed the symbol into a rag.

Yeah, it's being summarily dismissed as a preposterous idea.  I'm glad the OP is going to notify the author of their logical error.

At a certain point around the turn of the century (?) one was no longer able to use the flag, presidents, or reproduce certain symbols in conjunction with company advertising. One of the great signs in advertising is of our flag for the Cambell's soup company - do a google search. A little earlier or later perhaps but well in advance of the ATC offerings - and before someone gets smart - quite a few examples were issued with company stamping or factory numbers on the verso as identifiers of sorts.....
